In-line Skate Info: Understanding Different Types of Skates
If you’re looking to buy a pair of in-line skates, understand that there are several different types. The type of skating you plan to do will determine which type of skates you should be considering. There are four basic types, and buying the wrong one will be both uncomfortable and unsafe during skating. The categories of skates are recreational, aggressive, speed, and hockey.
Recreational skates are those intended for skating for pleasure, and aren’t suitable for doing complicated skate tricks, or reaching racing speeds. They’re made for lasting comfort and are among the more durable types of skate available. The boot itself may be of a stiff or flexible material.
Aggressive skates are made for skating tricks and stunts, like jumps or riding rails. They may include special features to enhance the skater’s ability to complete these tricks. Like recreational skates, they’re very durable, but they have smaller wheels to compensate for fast, sharp turns.
Speed skates are made for racing, or solo speed skating. They feature much larger wheels, and are usually composed of light, flexible materials. They may not be as durable as recreational skates.
Hockey skates are, of course, made for playing hockey. They feature small wheels, like aggressive skates, for maneuverability. They’re sometimes made of leather and flexibility is somewhat impaired by safety padding.
Skates are usually designed specifically for men or women, also. This the form used to determine the shape and sizing of the skate, and the cut of the back of the boot, to accommodate the difference in men’s and women’s calves.
